My internet is so dang slow!

Well, back on the rant board as usual. I'm ranting about my dang wireless internet! It's so dang unstable and unreliable! It goes down one time, then connects, then the connection is lost, then I get connected again, It's like a cell phone with bad signal! One thing that doesn't help matters is that I don't know anything about wireless networking. I can't tell if the router's working because it uses a light, and my ISP's tech support doesn't know how to help a blind person. If mom found out about any of this, she'd be so ticked off at me! I didn't do anything! I feel like throwing my router into the street and having a bus drive over it, lol.

well, what kind of router do you have? If you can give us a brand name and a model number one of the networking gurus around here may be able to tell you what to do? and what's withthat stuff about your mom being pissed at you? Nobody's blaming you for it, so just relax over there. LOL

When i was going to get broadband at home i wanted to connect my laptop with the cable but because the rooter is not in my room but in the sitting room where the television is they suggested wireless. I heard so many different experience with wireless so i was worying in kace the signal was going to appear and disappear but fortunately it worked well so far and never cut me off. But i had to use an external usb wireless card not the one which came with my computer because it wasn't strong enough.
Good luck.

Try moving the router as close to your computer as possible.
Also, you can try resetting the router and the modem by unplugging them each for about 15 seconds.
Does anyone else use wireless in your house? If so do they have the same problems you do?
Also, is your network secure or not secure.
If not secure you could have a situation where people are connecting to you and using up bandwith.
Maybe a different router or wireless card would also be advisable.
Also, have you tried just using your internet with out the router to make sure the router is at fault?

It could be a time out connection where it dies every few minutes. Try timing your connection to see if it's the same.

We've had wireless internet here since May, and haven't had any trouble once we got the connections established. I've been using a braile plus mobile manager since july that I borrow from work, and I had no trouble establishing a wireless connection with it.

I use a linxis router and wireless adapter. My mom's computer is connected via dsl, and it doesn't work well enough that she uses it for the internet. I know it's the router because I get these low signal and cannot connect messages all the time. I'll try timing the connection and see what I think. I can't even go online without the router. Mom thinks I downloaded a virus, but I didn't. I can't get mom to believe that, and she gets mad! How can I tell if my network is unsecure? I'm the only one who uses wireless. I'd go and buy a different router, but I don't know how to install them.

If you could connect to the network without entering a key then it's unsecured.

A few things.
First off, nod32 is your friend.
If you have any viruses it will find them.
Routers are easy to install.
Unplug the ether net cord from your old router, unplug your dsl modem, plug in the new router, rehook up your modem, plug the ether net cord in the router, wait for a minute, and you should be good to go.
If you don't know what an ether net cord is, it's the cord that looks like a phone jack but bigger.
In order to hook up to your net directly you must have the software for it on your computer, Otherwise, it won't work.
((Note, finding where to plug your either net cord on a new router can be tricky. It is usually the port that is slightly separated from the rest of the ports. Nod32 will run as a demo for the first 30 Days, afterwards if you like it you will need to buy it.)

Last night, my dad was using the internet for something, and just to connect, it took a couple hours. Also, my network is unsecure, I found out. If I need a new router, I heard some of the software needed for it was inaccessible. Then, that would be too bad.

Post 12 by purple penguin (Don't you hate it when someone answers their own questions? I do.) on Thursday, 15-Nov-2007 12:52:25

The software is only inaccessible if you are installing it.

Post 13 by audioadict (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Thursday, 15-Nov-2007 15:18:02

That's still inconvenient. What should I do if I have to install the software.

You may not have to if the router is the problem. Try connecting your computer to it and see what happens..

Post 15 by audioadict (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Wednesday, 21-Nov-2007 10:51:46

I'd do that, but I don't even know what a router looks like or how to connect one.

in order to secure your network you might want to contact your isp and tell them you want your network secured. this will most likely eliminate the messages you are getting

Thanks shawna, I'll try that.

I heard from a friend of mine that if you have 2 computers in your house, you need to use both of them to secure the network. The problem is that my computer has jaws, but my mom's doesn't have jaws, so I'm out of luck. Now, I wish I had dialup! It's less trouble. One time, my internet was down. I tried to tell mom that I didn't download anything, but she got mad at me anyway. So, from now on, I won't tell her about any computer problems.

Post 19 by margorp (I've got the gold prolific poster award, now is there a gold cup for me?) on Friday, 22-Feb-2008 11:28:53

dial up is more trouble I think.

Post 20 by purple penguin (Don't you hate it when someone answers their own questions? I do.) on Friday, 22-Feb-2008 11:48:56

It ties up the phone line.

Post 21 by audioadict (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Friday, 22-Feb-2008 12:54:55

I knew it did that. At least with dialup, I know I'm going to be able to use the internet and I won't get disconnected.

Post 22 by purple penguin (Don't you hate it when someone answers their own questions? I do.) on Friday, 22-Feb-2008 22:22:06

But it's such a pain because when it does disconnect, you lose what you are doing and have to wait another 10 minutes to log back in. Then wait another agonizing five minutes for the web page to load.
